The Purple Bowl is an independently owned eatery located at 306B W Franklin St. in Chapel Hill, NC. With a line of customers often extending out of the front door, fresh smoothies, acai bowls, toasts and coffee drinks have made it a go-to spot for fresh and healthy fare.

About

Ingredients such as blue spirulina, hemp milk and pitaya are used to create many of the menu’s highlights, at this student favorite cafe. Durham’s own Counter Culture Coffee and Ninth Street Bakery provide locally roasted coffee and fresh bread for their sweet and savory toasts. Every acai bowl served at The Purple Bowl is made with fairly traded and sustainably sourced acai berries from the Amazon rainforest.

In 2020, The Purple Bowl was voted the “Best Place for Vegetarians/Healthy Food” in Chapel Hill Magazine.

History

Taylor Gilland founded The Purple Bowl in 2017. The idea for the eatery started after Gilland’s family visited him in California in April 2016. He introduced his mom and sister to acai bowls, who enjoyed them so much they wanted to recreate them back home in Chapel Hill. The Gilland family developed their own concept of an acai bowl and opened a place in downtown Chapel Hill.
