Local Articles on LGBT Issues:

PLEASE NOTE : This page is open to all historical articles related to LGBT history in Champaign/Urbana. However, a portion of these articles were written during periods of history when discrimination and ignorance towards LGBTQ people was much more socially accepted. For the sake of portraying our local history accurately1, (legitimate) news articles that portray disagreeable ideas, instances of discrimination, etc. are encouraged not to be deleted. Instead, please mark such articles with a "[TW]" before the title to indicate "trigger warning"2, and/or with a "[D]" to indicate articles that include or  disagreeable/discriminating. Uppercase letters should be used for strongly "triggering" and/or disagreeable content (such as blatant insulting discrimination, descriptions of violence, etc.). Likewise, lowercase letters should be used to indicate if an article does not have strongly/blatant disagreeable and/or triggering content, but has content that could be disagreeable to some readers.

1. Although it may not always present positive views, portraying local history accurately is important for several reasons. Firstly, by seeing the past clearly, we see how we have developed and grown as a community. We see what those within our community have accomplished and the adversity that has been overcome. Secondly, we learn from the past, and therefore should not censor our history.

2.A "trigger warning" is something used to alert people when an internet post, article, picture, video, audio clip, or some other media could potentially cause extremely negative reactions (such as post-traumatic flashbacks, self-harm, strong emotional responses, etc.) due to its content. Usually abbreviated as "TW".
