De Lauer's Newsstand in Downtown Oakland has been a landmark since 1907. The newsstand has always offered a wide selection of newspapers from around the world while open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Faced with closure in 2008, a last minute sale to De Lauer's manager Fasil Lemma and Lemma's business partner Abdo Shrooh saved the newsstand for future generations.
Charles De Lauer, who took over his father's newsstand when the elder De Lauer passed away in 1934, worked at the store seven days a week for 74 years. He died from leukemia and lymphoma on August 7, 2008, just a month after the successful sale of the newsstand.
The location on Broadway is the third location since 1907; the business moved there in 1966. The original 1907 location was near 7th and Washington.

The newsstand suffered a serious fire in 1984. Charles De Lauer immediately vowed to set up in a temporary location. 2
