Oakland City Jail - Oakland

In June 2005, in an effort to reduce a $32 million budget deficit, the Oakland City Council voted to close the city jail. When this occurred the following month, inmates – mostly short-term prisoners awaiting their arraignments, along with approximately 100 federal inmates awaiting trial or deportation – were relocated to Alameda County jails (either the 700-inmate capacity Glenn E. Dyer Detention Facility located at 550 – 6th Street, or Santa Rita in Dublin, capable of holding 4,000 prisoners).

Located at 611 Broadway (part of the Police Administration Building), the city jail still stands but is closed and nonfunctional. Its closure resulted in the loss of 89 jobs and the reassignment of five senior Oakland Police Department jail supervisors.
