Millbrook Road is a major thoroughfare running east and west across the city of Raleigh. Named for a former town by the name of Millbrook at the intersection of Millbrook and Old Wake Forest Roads, it is a connector between Glenwood Avenue and Capital Boulevard. The roadway is separated into east and west segments by Six Forks Road.
Route Description
West Millbrook Road
This segment of Millbrook Road begins at US 70/Glenwood Avenue as a continuation of Duraleigh Road. The four-lane roadway curves to the east as it travels past an apartment complex. The roadway turns to the southeast at Pleasant Grove Church Road, passing by Wooten Meadows Park at the southern terminus of Leesville Road. Nearly a mile to the east, Millbrook Road meets NC 50/Creedmoor Road in the midst of a commercial area. The roadway returns to residential development, turning to the northeast after crossing Lead Mine Road. Milbrook Road continues to the east, running along the southern shore of Shelly Lake, then continuing through a residential area. The western portion of Millbrook Road ends at an intersection with Six Forks Road.
East Millbrook Road
Continuing from West Millbrook Road, East Millbrook Road travels due southeast through a residential portion of Raleigh, much of this section consisting of 1950s-era houses with driveways leading directly to Millbrook Road and a hilly topography. The landscape of Millbrook Road changes to mostly commercial development once the roadway has an intersection with Falls of Neuse Road. The roadway continues to the east for half a mile, then has an intersection with Old Wake Forest Road, running through the former town of Millbrook. After the intersection, Millbrook Road goes through a railroad crossing and travels through an industrial area on the other side of Atlantic Avenue. The industrial area ends at Green Road, with Millbrook Road continuing through another commercial area and has a small superstreet intersection before reaching its eastern terminus at Capital Boulevard, opposite the north end of New Hope Road.
Projects
In 2021, the North Carolina Department of Transportation shared details about a project that will eliminate the existing CSX railroad crossing on Millbrook Road between Old Wake Forest Road and Atlantic Avenue. Part of a larger project to make improvements to the railroad corridor between Washington, DC and Charlotte, the construction work will lower the grade of Millbrook Road, allowing for the creation of a new railroad overpass with room for a parallel track in the future. Slated to begin in 2023, the railroad project will require relocating and reconstructing driveways accessing business along the corridor.
