Obituary

Stegeman, John Crawford Ann Arbor, MI John Crawford "Jack" Stegeman died January 21, 2011, in Ann Arbor and was buried peacefully at a family graveside ceremony on January 24. He was born October 3, 1923 in Minneapolis, MN and moved with his family to Stalwart, MI (Upper Peninsula) at a young age, and eventually, to Ann Arbor. He interrupted his undergraduate degree program at the University of Michigan to voluntarily enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II. Jack was accepted to flight training and subsequently led 35 bombing missions over Germany and the Balkans, as a pilot of B-24 Liberator aircraft, rising to rank of Captain. After the war, he was graduated from the U of M with a B.B.A. in 1947. He was a flight instructor of F-86 Sabre Jet aircraft during the Korean conflict and participated in flight testing at Los Alamos in connection with the atomic weapons program. He was Squadron Commander at Selfridge Air National Guard Base and retired in 1959 with the rank of Major. Jack married Lois Marie Urban in 1957, who survives him, as do their three children, Sally (Larry), William (Scott), and Thomas. He started a real estate investment and development company in Ann Arbor. With an emphasis on quality of design, he built several buildings in the Central Campus area, and he volunteered to spearhead the development of Lurie Terrace senior housing for the non-profit Senior Citizens Guild. Jack was a devoted husband and father. With his wife, he was an active supporter of the University Musical Society. He loved to travel to off-beat parts of the world and take long walks in any type of weather, often eschewing an automobile to get around the town he cared so much about. Contributions in Jack's honor may be made to the University Musical Society (UMS Development Office, 881 N. University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109) or to Huron Woods Senior Health Services in support of the music program (5361 McAuley Drive, P.O. Box 995, Ann Arbor, MI 48106, Attn Mr. William Scott). The family appreciated the outstanding funeral arrangements made by Jim Robison of the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home, Inc. in Saline, MI.
