Planting

Not Looking forward to doing all the planting yourself?! Do not worry, here at the Growing ground we offer full planting services at very competitive rates and out planters are very well trained and completely capable of putting in your tree or shrub the proper way, the first time. We can plant anything from a tiny litter flower to a huge 4.5" tree. when we do a planting we always treat out trees with a root and boost fertilizer and if it is needed, we will stake the tree to the ground so that it stays in place.

The ideal time to plant trees and shrubs is during the dormant season, which is in the fall after leaves drop or early spring before the buds break. Weather conditions are cool and allow plants to establish roots in the new location before spring rains and summer heat stimulate new top growth. We make sure our trees are properly cared for in the garden center, and given the appropriate care during transport to prevent damage, our trees can be planted throughout the growing season. In either situation, proper handling during planting is essential to ensure a healthy future for new trees and shrubs

Whether the tree you are planting is balled and burlapped or is bare root, it is important to understand that its root system has been reduced by 90 to 95 percent of its original size during transplanting. As a result of the trauma caused by the digging process, trees commonly exhibit what is known as transplant shock. Transplant shock is indicated by slow growth and reduced vigor following transplanting. Proper site preparation before and during planting coupled with good follow-up care reduces the amount of time the plant experiences transplant shock and allows the tree to quickly establish in its new location. Carefully follow eight simple steps, and you can significantly reduce the stress placed on the plant at the time of planting.

Watering

During the first couple growing seasons, your newly planted tree is expending a lot of energy trying to get its roots established in the soil. Especially during the first few summers, it will have a difficult time dealing with heat and drought. You can make this easier by providing water and covering the soil with wood-chip mulch. Deep watering can help speed the root establishment. Deep water consists of keeping the soil moist to a depth that includes all the roots but does not leave the water soupy or over watered. Not enough water is harmful for the tree but too much water is bad too. Over watering is a common tree care mistake. Moist is different than soggy, and you can judge this by feel. A damp soil that dries for a short period will allow adequate oxygen to permeate the soil. As a rule of thumb your soil should be moist. Usually 30 seconds with a steady stream of water from a garden hose . Mulching is also key in retaining moisture in the soil but we recommend that you wait until you know how much water your tree need before you put mulch down. You can check soil moisture by using a garden trowel and inserting it into the ground to a depth of 2", and then move the blade of the trowel back and forth to create a small narrow trench. Then use your finger to touch the soil. If it is most to the touch, then they do not need water.
