Standing 172 feet tall, this bell tower rings each hour at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The bell tower was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1931 and was funded by John Motley Morehead III, Class of 1891, and Rufus Lenoir Patterson II. Morehead also established the Morehead Planetarium and the Morehead-Cain Scholars program, which was originally called the Morehead scholarship program, but was renamed after a 2007 donation from the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation.

The bell tower is located on South Road. Morehead proposed the idea for the bell tower originally in the 1920s. However, the university declined. In 1926, Morehead proposed plans for the bell tower once more, on top of Wilson Library, but Louis Round Wilson rejected the idea. Plans for the bell tower finally came into being though the cooperation of Morehead and Patterson.

The hedge and lawn surrounding the tower were design by William C. Coker, who also created the campus Arboretum. The tower once contained 12 manually-operated bells, but now contains 14 mechanized bells. The largest bell reads: “Governor John Motley Morehead,” and the second largest is inscribed "William Lenoir," both prominent men in university and state history.

Though usually closed to the public, in the springtime, current UNC-CH seniors are invited to partake in the Bell Tower Climb, sponsored by the General Alumni Association. Seniors are allowed to climb the bell tower's steps and enjoy the view, looking out over the university in the days before they graduate.

The Bell Tower is in a central location on UNC-CH's campus, and many students pass by the bell tower daily, as it lies between South Campus and North Campus.
