History

The Daily Tar Heel is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s student newspaper. It was founded in 1893 as a weekly four-page tabloid that students used to have to pay an annual subscription for. Since 1993, it has been fully funded by its advertising revenue, making it fiscally and editorially independent.

In 1929 it became a daily newspaper. The DTH focuses mainly on university news and sports, but also includes coverage on Orange County and North Carolina. During the school year, it is published 5 days a week and weekly during the university's summer school sessions.

The paper circulates 16,000 free copies each publishing day during the school year to 215 distribution locations throughout campus, Chapel Hill, Carborro, Chatham and Durham. Its estimated daily readership is 38,000. It is the largest news organization in Orange County.

The newsroom contains 14 section desks, each headed by its own editor. In addition to these editors, the newsroom staff also includes a managing editor, online editor and opinion editor. The newsroom staff is headed by an elected editor-in-chief. The editor-in-chief is responsible for all the news and opinion content and serves as the public face for the newspaper. Overall, the DTH staffs about 250 volunteer students.

Awards

The paper is one of the most decorated college newspapers in the country. It has won multiple Associated Collegiate Press Pacemakers and SPJ Mark of Excellence awards. The Daily Tar Heel has also been recognized as having the most outstanding business and advertising staff in the country for four consecutive years.
