Kulturhuset describes itself as one of Copenhagen's most active cultural centers, hosting more than 400 cultural events per year. This includes festivals, concerts, children's theater, events for local associations, markets, and dances. There are also rooms that can be booked for private parties.

Kulturhuset Islands Brygge is part of a wide network of cultural sites in Copenhagen, but is formally connected with the Islands Brygge library, Christianshavn library, and the hall at Islands Brygge School. They do not have a board but strive for transparency. According to its website, KIB is a replacement for the former community center of Islands Brygge, which was demolished in 2000 to make room for new homes.

Such an active community center speaks to the role of community in Denmark. With over 4,000 Facebook fans, three distinct music societies, multiple permanent groups for children, KIB shows how involved those in Copenhagen can be with local organizations.
