According to John Lofland in this Davis Community Scrapbook story, there was a serious discussion about whether to permanently change the name of our town to "Bette Davis." In 1940, a spokesperson from the film industry offered to premiere a Bette Davis film in the town in exchange for this ultimate act of hype.
