June 23, 2008 A chemical spill in rooms 129 and 130 of the Chemistry building shut down the building for the day. The accident occurred in the morning, and it is estimated that about 2 liters of nitrobenzene was spilled. Source

March 6, 2008 Mark Christopher Woods, a UCD freshman, was arrested after explosive materials were found in his dorm room in Tercero's D Building. Several hundred students in Tercero were evacuated and had to spend the night outside of their dorm rooms.

October 31st/November 1st, 2007 The Colleges at La Rue were hit with a major blackout due to an unknown cause. Internet proved to be online, thus this entry was made with reserve backup power. Was restored at 1:09am.

    • We got hit at the same time. It seemed to be right at midnight. Computer error, perhaps?
      • The Colleges management sent out an e-mail explaining. They say a rat touched one of the high-voltage fuses and electrocuted itself, disrupting most southwest campus buildings and the apartments along La Rue Rd. Orchard Park was hit, too. Tercero dorms L-M were in the dark the longest (power didn't come back until 6:30am for them).

November 30, 2006 A UCDMC Shuttle Bus overturns on eastbound Highway 50 at Jefferson Blvd at about 9:00am, causing traffic to back up all the way past the Yolo Causeway. There are reportedly 22 minor injuries among 27 passengers on the bus.

June 14, 2006

Davis Police Chief Jim Hyde resigns, blaming Human Relations Commission. From the Davis Enterprise:

Hyde largely blamed the Human Relations Commission and its chairwoman, Cecilia Escamilla Greenwald, for “limit(ing) my effectiveness to work with this fine community.”

“Despite the great work of the members of this police department, the HRC has divided the community along race and religious lines to fulfill a self-serving political agenda,” Hyde wrote in the e-mail, a copy of which was obtained this morning by The Enterprise.

“In my 27 years of government service, 10 years of clinical psychology and 16 years of working with nonprofit organizations, the HRC is the most dysfunctional and incestuous group I have ever witnessed. I hope that (the) City Council will correct this community problem.”

February 11, 2006

10:55 PM: A high speed pursuit took place tonight along along the edge of The Domes and proceeded onto Hutchison Drive. Two CHP cars were in pursuit of the perp, as well as several DPD and UCDPD cars (which were driving much slower/safer). The car being chased lost its bumper as it did a little offroading south of Rec Pool. A police helicopter was called in too. BrentLaabs was very annoyed that both the suspect and the police cut him off.

I also saw this happen, a bunch of police cars were chasing a vehicle towards La Rue, then a police helicopter was flying overhead with a spotlight looking for the car. There were police vehicles all over La Rue looking for the car about 20 minutes afterward.

Power is out in at least some parts of East Davis due to last nights storm. The media were hyping this storm on the TV last night with much talk about the flood stages in various areas. Power restored (at least partially) at 10:20am.

UC Davis beats Stanford in Men's basketball 64-58!!!

UC Regents voted 17-2 to raise student fees for the fifth year in a row. Undergraduate fees raise 8%, graduate school by 10%, and professional school by 5 to 10%. The two who voted against it attempted to delay the vote until January - in the hopes that the new California State budget will have more funding for the schools. This was rejected as 'people needed time to plan ahead' and they say that if they get more of a budget through the state, they may vote to rescind and reduce the fees. This comes among a San Franciso Chronicle expose, about the corruption and scandals involved. Article The changes come just days after The Chronicle reported that UC routinely pays employees far more than is publicly reported. In addition to salaries and overtime, UC spent $871 million last fiscal year on bonuses, relocation allowances, stipends and an array of other hidden cash compensation. And that doesn't include fringe benefits.

This of course is info found after they refused to release the executive raise list.

Yet another article, where California Senator Jeff Denham is quoted "This is outrageous," Denham said. "While students face rate increases every year and UC rank and file workers face salary freezes, the top UC administrators will be getting secret salary hikes. The regents should postpone their vote and let the public see the documents."

October 22, 2005 The UC Davis Police Department is asking for the news media's and public's assistance in the search for a graduate student who has been missing for three days.

Beverly "Bev" Paul was last seen at the Sierra Vista Hospital in Sacramento on the morning of Oct. 18. She was reported missing by a UC Davis faculty advisor and has not been seen by family or friends since then. Her vehicle was found Friday morning at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Paul, who is a graduate student in animal science, is a 26-year-old African American woman, 6-feet tall, and 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes and a dark complexion.

She was last seen wearing a blue hooded, zip-up sweatshirt, khaki pants and white tennis shoes with a blue stripe.

September 29th, 2005

Armed robbery at First Northern Bank downtown - Davis Enterprise article, California Aggie article. Robbers are at large and the Police ask anyone who sees any suspicious activity to call and report it. When a dye pack inside a bag of money was activated, the robbers abandoned it inside their stolen vehicle (from El Cerrito) amid a cloud of red smoke and ran off empty, albeit red, handed.

The robbery occurred around 10AM. Armed officers were patrolling around the South Davis Bike Path (next to the Aggie Village) until at least noon. At 4PM there were no police vehicles outside of the bank and the bank looked like it was in operation. The police have been calling Davis area phones with an automated message describing the situation. Again, if you see any suspicious activity, please call and report it (530)747-5400.

My coworker got a call from the police to be on the lookout for random items of clothing or suspicious parcels downtown, a downtown bank had been robbed. The four suspects have escaped, "last seen running southbound on C Street" (according to article). Looking for more info if anyone has it

Moobilenet Down Across Campus

The campus wireless network was down due to a massive DDoS attack. Other services (SISWeb, MyUCDavis) seemed to have been affected as well.

CALIFORNIA LAWMAKERS PASS GAY MARRIAGE BILL

"The California Legislature on Tuesday became the first legislative body in the country to approve same-sex marriages.....The 41-35 vote sends the bill to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.... The bill's supporters compared the legislation to earlier civil rights campaigns, including efforts to eradicate slavery and give women the right to vote." Article link

  • Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill on September 29th, 2005 citing incorrect procedure, as the bill in his opinion overrode a public vote (Proposition 22, a California ballot initiative passed in 2000). He supports such a move in the courts.

UC DAVIS OFFERS FIFTEEN OPENINGS FOR TULANE AND LOYOLA STUDENTS

In the midst of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, students who had been planning to start the school year at Tulane or Loyola University in New Orleans are now scrambling for new schools to spend the Fall 2005 and quite possibly Spring 2006 semesters. UC Davis has offered special admission to Tulane and Loyola students.

GROUND SPRAYING PANEL CUT SHORT BY ROWDY PUBLIC

On August 23rd, 2005, a open panel on the issue of ground spraying for Mosquitoes dissolved in chaos when the attendees refused to follow the planned format. The format had been prearranged; a panel of experts would answer questions from the public. The questions were to be submitted in writing and Mayor Ruth Asmundson was to read them to the panel. After two questions, the gathered public began shouting at the panel that they should learn to practice Democracy and moving toward the front of the room. In response, the panel and Mayor closed the meeting and left out the back. There are no meetings planned in the future at this time.

AERIAL SPRAYING OVER SACRAMENTO TO BEGIN MONDAY NIGHT

    On Monday, August 8, Sacramento Vector Control officials will begin aerial spraying pyrethrins over a large part of Sacramento County in an effort to fight mosquitoes and the West Nile virus. A 71,000-acre area from Interstate 5 to Citrus Heights will be sprayed beginning at 8pm. A chrysanthemum derived pesticide often found in flea and tick sprays, pyrethrins degrade quickly in sunlight and, according to the EPA, does not pose an unreasonable risk to humans in small doses. Officials said it will be distributed in such small amounts residents probably won't even see the spray and that it will not harm pets.
