David Risling Jr. "helped develop Native American studies as an academic discipline" at UC Davis, where he was a senior lecturer for 21 years. He has been referred to as "the Father of Indian education." In January of 2006 the City Council renamed Sutter Place in his honor by calling it David Risling Jr. Court.
