A-Z Discount Windows, Skylights, & Doors

Review provided by Jim Cochran, Thaddeus Drive on July 19, 2008

I purchased replacement skylights from A-Z and was completely satisfied with their service. They are located in San Jose, phone 408 243-4591. Their shop is a mess and parking is very difficult, but they did what they promised. I purchased a 2' x 2' double dome skylight and a 2' x 3' double dome skylight. One had to be ordered and that took about 10 days.

ADDING SKYLIGHTS TO EXISTING FOAM ROOF

Summary provided by Sisca Lawi on June 8, 2012

Questions Directed to Monta Loma Neighborhood Mailing List:

Can skylights be added to existing foam roof without compromising integrity of the roof? Do you have a recommendation for a skylight contractor?

    Responses Received:
    - I have a skylight in one of my bathrooms, and it never damaged the integrity of the foam roof. The skylight leaked once, shortly after installation, but that was fixed with a silicon seal and there's never been a problem since. The foam roof in that area is just fine, too.
    - We have added skylights with no problem. We have had no problem and have had our foam roof for several years now. The skylights are great.
    - The best time to install the skylight would have been just prior to the application of the new foam roof. I agree with others who said that you should still be able to install a skylight at this time, it just requires involvement of your roofer to ensure the integrity of the existing roof is not compromised when the opening is being cut, and the roofer should be involved in sealing around the new skylight curb. The carpenter will build the curb and install the skylight, but I think your roofer needs to add new foam and adhere it to existing foam.

    Skylights Contractor/Installer:
I didn't get any specific contractor recommendation, but below is the summary of responses received. One response is from a homeowner who is in the process of installing new foam roof & skylights. I'll be in touch with him when the installation is completed.
    - DIY
    - My contractor was a relative who doesn't live locally, so posting his name wouldn't be useful to anyone.
    - We used Mastercraft to install skylights in our foam roof. The owner has since retired, but they have been great.
