West Oakland Church of God (now Twenty-third Avenue Church of God) was started about 1943 by Joe and Emily Eddens, meeting at their house at 945 Campbell Street.

Elton and Sarah Pointer, parents of The Pointer Sisters, began leadership in 1945. 2 The church moved through various storefront locations and in [ ? ] purchased land at 10th and Myrtle and built a church.

The area was faced with redevelopment in 1967 and the church was forced to move. Under  Rev. Curtis Barge, the church moved to its current location at 1940 - 23rd Avenue. 1
