William Gagan (1842 - September 15, 1882) was the publisher of the Oakland Daily News, begun in September 1863, and was also very active in local politics during the 1860's. 

S. B. English, publisher of the Oakland Press beginning in January of 1863, sold his equipment to William Gagan after the Oakland Press failed. 1   There are also conflicting accounts that the Oakland Press, the first Republican newspaper, was started by Horace Clark after arriving in California with William Gagan (his brother-in-law) and Harry Morse in 1860. 2, 3

In 1869 Gagan lived on the north side of 9th Street. between Broadway and Washington Street.
