Summary of Goodspeed

Born August 12, 1823 in Georgia. He came to Powhatan in 1854. In 1876 he started a mercantile business and was engaging in the business until 1886. In 1863 he was elected sheriff and served until 1867 and for four years acted as collector and assessor. He took the 1860 census. He married Catherine McElroy on October 24, 1844. They had three surviving children William, Catherine and Ella. He is a Presbyterian and Mason.

Moved to Powhatan in 1854 to serve as schoolmaster for newly opened academy. Built ferryman’s house for Lindsay on the east bank. Entered partnership with Werner in a wagon/blacksmith shop. In 1867 he joined George Wright in mercantile trade. Sold remnants of goods and business to E.T. Wayland in 1888. Served as deputy county surveyor in 1856. Elected as sheriff 1862-1866. Donated the land for Powhatan cemetery. One son, Phineas, married into Raney family. William married Lavinia Martin, daughter of F.G. Martin. Daughter married Clay Sloan. Died January 14, 1909. Buried in Powhatan.
