Willis Matthews was a partner in the firm Weir & Matthews. He was born in Lawrence County on November 1, 1857 to William J. Matthews and Eliza J. McGhehey. He gained experience in mercantile operations while living in Powhatan, but eventually moved to Black Rock. He was the treasurer of the Black Rock Masonic Lodge.
