The Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989 and was the most sizable seismic event since the 1906 Earthquake. It resulted in a number of deaths, as well as the need for overhaul and renovation on many of the bay area's buildings and roadways. The Marina was one of the most badly hurt sections of the city, as it was built on landfill.
The earthquake is notable for having taken place during the World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants.
