Many hilly neighborhoods in San Francisco have staircases to allow pedestrians to get from one street to another. "Stairway Walks in San Francisco" by Adah Bakalimsky is a guidebook about our famous staircases. There are also staircase walking tours available. In the Sunset district, two of these staircases have been mosaically tiled, inspired by mosaic steps in Rio de Janeiro.
