QUINN, PTE NORMAN – Regimental # 3108243

James Norman Quinn was born July 10, 1897 to   John James and Mary Ann (Robinson) Quinn. (In his attestation paper, James Norman ‘Normie’ identified his father as John David Quinn.)

He was called up Nov. 3, 1917. His actual date of enlistment was Feb 25, 1918 at Hamilton as part of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Central Ontario Regiment.

 

He arrived in England on May 27, 1918. On June 6, 1918 he was transferred to the 3rd Reserve Battalion and was sent to France in September with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles.

Norman would appear to have arrived at the front at the time of the campaign at Arras as part of the ‘One Hundred Day Offensive’. The War Diaries for the 4th do note that 5 men were gassed in mid-September and identify that there were other incidents of gas shelling. The 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles was involved in the Battle of Cambrai and were at the Belgian border near Valenciennes, France when the war ended on November 11. 

In November Norman suffered a severe case of appendicitis. and returned to England. In January of 1919 he transferred to the Central Ontario Regiment and returned to Canada April of 1919. He was discharged April 25, 1919.
