STAMP, PTE WILLIAM Regimental # 1043103
William Amos Stamp was born July 15, 1892 at Gravenhurst, son of George and Nancy (Hicks) Stamp. At the time of the 1911 census, William lived with his parents and siblings in Parry Sound.
His attestation took place April 10, 1917 at Renfrew in the 240th Battalion. His continous service date is given as June 23, 1917 with his latest address given as Parry Sound.
William arrived in England, May 14, 1917 on the Megantic and in May was assigned to Canadian Forestry Corps. In June 1917, he was taken on strength with the 47th Battalion[1] in France. He landed in France June 6, 1917 as part of 47 Company (a company was a unit of approximately 200 men divided into 4 platoons). He was appointed “Log Setter”.
On November 16, 1917 William was admitted to hospital due to tonsillitis
He returned to Canada Feb. 8, 1919 on the SS Caronia and was discharged March 4, 1919
William married Hazel Elias on March 6, 1919 in Parry Sound. William was identified as a sawmill setter at the time of marriage.
In the 1935 list of electors William and his wife were identified as living in Ardbeg. In the 1940’s Electors list William Stamp continued to live in Ardbeg.
[1] The 47th Battalion, was a unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force authorized on 7 November 1914. It was raised for World War I by the 104th Regiment Westminster Fusiliers of Canada. The battalion arrived in France on 11 August 1916 where it fought as part of the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division until the end of the war.
