George Stewart was born January 23, 1893 in Magnetawan, the son of Francis ‘Frank’ Stewart and Ellen Robinson.

At the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses, the family was identified as living in Chapman Township – with the address being specifically given as Lot 95, Concession B in 1911. In the 1911 census, George was identified as a lock tenderer.

George was identified as marrying Minnie Rebecca Carlton in Essex County on July 21, 1923.

George died March 9, 1951 in Toronto.

In his enlistment documents George is identified as signing up on January 8, 1918, He identifies his place of birth as Feb. 23, 1893 in McKellar – but the actual register of birth shows January 23, 1893 in Magnetawan.

In his Discharge Certificate, George is identified as having enlisted in the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd C.O.R. in Oshawa on January 8, 1918.

He is identified as having served in 1st Battalion of the Canada Machine Gun Corps in France.

George arrived in England on March 4, 1918.

In May he transferred to the 6th Machine Gun Depot and in July he arrived in France in the Canadian Machine Gun Corps.

In September he joined the 1st Battalion of the Machine Gun Corps where he remained for the duration.

In March of 1919 he proceeded to England and in May returned to Canada on the S.S. Baltic.

In his records, George is identified as having been hospitalized for 31 days in April/May of 1919 – there is no record of him being gassed.
