The Freedom Farmers Market is a weekly Saturday market in Temescal.

The project is a partnership between Farms to Grow, a nonprofit that is trying to support black farmers and encourage sustainable farming as an option in the black community, and Brothers Kitchen, a restaurant in West Oakland that initially lent its parking lot for the the market.

  • As of summer 2014 the market is in a new location at 5316 Telegraph, Oakland, Ca

The project took over a year to plan with folks like Ken Shandy (owner of Brothers Kitchen and a local community activist), Dr. Gail Meyers (founder & Executive Director of Farms to Grow), and more.

An article in Oakland Local says: "Meyers and others, like volunteer Michelle Lee, who describes herself as a”working ally” began meeting at nearby Greasebox Cafe, the site of a community garden, a year ago to plan." The project is also being supported by Your Market Produce Buying Club. It started out as a Wednesday market but is now a Saturday market.

They have an amazing pickle vendor (so I hear!)!!

Here's a video with more information about the market (this is from their IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign):
