Toronto City Council

Toronto city council voted 23-22 to defer a decision on possible new taxes until October 22, 2007 in hopes of making the city's fiscal problems an issue in the Provincial Election campaign leading up to the October 10 election date.

The Mayor's proposal for two new taxes could generate $300-million for the cash-strapped city. The proposed taxes, permitted under New city of Toronto Act, called for a $60.00 fee on motor vehicle ownership registration and a land transfer tax of up to two per cent on the purchase of a home.

The city already faces a $575-million budget shortfall without new tax revenues in place for next year.

The 23 votes in favour of the deferral is much higher than the ceiling of about 18 votes the mayor's opponents have been able to garner up til now.
